I've got a '51 C8 with a stuck motor. I got a replacement engine but cannot get the Hydramatic removed from the old engine. Anybody got any suggestions?
It's not easy but it can be done. First, drain both engine and tranny. Next , I would flip the engine and tranny on the head and remove the engine oil pan.Unbolt the oil pan. Then unbolt the connecting rod caps. Remove caps, timing cover and chain and pull crank straight up . Crank is attached to flywheel and tranny at this point. From here remove the crank from the flywheel. Your tranny is now free. Messy job but it works.Did this about 3 weeks ago from a 308 that was FROZEN really bad. I mean BAD. Good luck.
Unbolt the bell housing from the motor and slid to the rear and you can unbolt the torque converter from the flywheel. Walt.

Thats true except if the engine is frozen you can only unbolt a few of the torque converter bolts.Unbolting the bell housing won't help until ALL flywheel/torque converter bolts are detached If I remember correctly there are 32 bolts to loosen .The flywheel won't rotate on a frozen block.Your idea works IF the block is not frozen solid
Bell housings for hydra are plentiful, just break the bellhousings with a sledge on top.

Maybe a wee bit C4 or semtex?? Ought to do the trick.
