We finally got the 54 power steering installed on my 51 Hornet. I had purchased the pump and piston assembly but did not have the mounting brackets. Sent the pump and piston to Lares and $750 later had a rebuilt system. Fortunately Ken Ufheil had a pattern for the brackets needed so we went about cold bending the 1/4" and 3/8" pieces needed for the mounting. I would not want to try to drill and mount the brackets with the engine in the car but it would be possible if you have a lift. I now have a small pneumatic brake that can bend the plate steel. Wish I had that when we started. You can imagine bending the plate in a large vise with a two foot crescent wrench with a five foot pipe on it to bent the plate to close tolerances. We actually did it and they turned out great. Not sure I would have done it if I knew up front what it would take but sometimes ignorance is bliss. Now really happy with the result. Thought I would post a few pics of the process since not many have done the retrofit of the 54 PS onto a 51.
The front view is a bit cluttered as we also added an AC compressor to complete the 7x build.
Where does the part go shown in the first two photos? Inside the frame rail?
That is correct. It fits inside the frame rail and you have two holes to drill in the frame rail. There is an opening in the frame rail and the cut out part in the pics allows the flat pieced to fit up against the inside curled lip of the opening.
Looks like I inadvertently posted a couple pics in duplicate and left of one showing the third piece needed.
The 54 unit is not power steering, It's power assist. Walt.
