On my '53 Hornet the rear package shelf (under the back window) is pretty messed up and I'd like to reupholster it. No problem finding the fabric but I've made no headway on finding something like the panel board that is under the fabric. It's that black fiber like stuff that looks like fiber impregnated with asphalt or some such black mastic.
Has anyone been able to find either the material or a reasonable substitute. If so, where and how much did it cost?
Thanks,
Ed
It's just panel board. Any trim shop should be able to supply you with the more modern equivalent.
THIS COMPANY has a great number of products that are helpful in restoration. Download and study their catalog.
Have you checked with Doug Wildrick? I know he is having new door panels made, so I suspect he would have this back shelf as well.
I too am looking for "that black fiber like stuff that looks like fiber impregnated with asphalt or some such black mastic". In my case it was used as a sound deadening material stuck inside the doors and trunk etc. Pretty horrible stuff really but is has a texture which is hard to replicate for an original restoration.
Here is my rear shelf in green. Is the same as the kick panels in front. This is not concours, but what I have. Vinyl-look-like on board !!

Looks sensational Richard. My rear shelf, door cards trunk cards and kick panels were all made from a generic panel board used by any upholstery shop too. Not "that black fiber like stuff that looks like fiber impregnated with asphalt or some such black mastic". I was looking for it for other locations.
I'm pretty sure that Restoration Specialties (whose link I supplied in my reply, above) carries the black waterproof cardboard you seek..
Here is another company that sells it: http://www.perfectfit.com/15347/154533/Chipboard-Car-Panelboard/Black-Treated-Waterproof-Panelboard.html
Thanks Jon. I'll investigate.
Thanks to all who replied. I now have several good leads and will follow up.
