Hey all,
I am about to undergo replacement of motor and transmission mounts on my 51 Hornet.. I aim to go front to back, as it is easiest to get to the front mounts.
First question is about the safest way to lift the big six from below. The crossmember covers more of the engine than I would have expected, so is the sump the right place to lift? Is it better to put a bottle jack under the front, and thread a 2x4 through the slot at the front?
Second, I am not at all sure my 2 post lift has the reach necessary to get under a stepdown, so I might have to do this the old fashioned way. Is there any advice on jackstand locations or general lifting of the car?
Thanks

Ryan,
There is a strong, flat crossmember behind the transmission. A stand under each end of this crossmember (and a strong floor where the stands sit) is a safe and convenient way to lift the front end of the car. I like to have the spare tire under the car too, just to be safe.
You can lift the transmission a little bit, so you can slide the rear motor mount sideways to get it out, after removing the screw at each end of the mount which attaches the mount to a narrow crossmember, and one screw which you reach from the middle of the bottom of the mount (there is an access hole in the crossmember). This screw attaches the mount to the bell housing. This is usually hard to reach because the rubber which is squashed will have mostly filled up the access hole. I don't remember the size of socket you will need. Hopefully someone will say the size, because if you put in the wrong size socket, it will get stuck in there, and that will be bad! Perhaps you can drill out this rubber with a large drill bit, but I have not needed to drill it out so I don't know whether the old rubber will come out easily.
The front can be lifted, one side at a time, if you have a way of pulling from above, to replace each front motor mount.
