Well, I got my 40 Hudson almost back together. just a few body parts to go. I was having a problem with the clutch before I tore it apart. I have to let the pedal up over half way before it grabs. so I ordered a new clutch and now that I have it together I have the same problem. When I adjust it by making the yoke longer or shorter, the pedal is almost all the way up before it takes hold.So this is the same problem I had before..Somewhere in the middle of the yoke ,it grabs about half way up. no matter how I adjust it ,I cant get it any better. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong. I don't want to finish putting it together and not have it right. Please ,I have looked at everything and can't tell what is wrong. thanks for the help
Stan

When you say you have a new clutch, you mean you have a new cork disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing from Wildrick restorations or Ron Fellows, right?
The fingers in the pressure plate assy have to be at the right height. The clutch disk needs to have the corks in there, right. I ask because some people don't know about the Hudson clutch. You have clutch fluid in there, right? Sometimes the linkages are worn and much of the movement is used up in taking up the slack.

Thanks Mike, I have a new cork plate and throwout bearing, but used the old pressure plate . I put in new clutch oil. I got it all from Ron Fellows.
So if you think that is the problem? If so I guess I better get busy taking it apart and get it to Ron for rebuild. Thank you for your reply.

Have you talked to Ron about this? No harm in doing so, I'd think. Don't go taking the thing apart until you've talked to a few more people, maybe this is some sort of adjustment problem instead.

Which hole do you have the clevis in? You get more purchase by fitting in the hole closest to the shaft.

I'm glad others chimed in while I was gone! No, do not take it apart if it has all new parts in it ! Sounds like a problem in the linkage or adjustment. Work on the first. Where are you? Maybe someone who lives close can come help you with it.

Stan,

Is the clutch smooth or does it grab? If it is smooth, the three clutch fingers are most likely properly adjusted. If the clutch grabs, you may have to take the transmission off and adjust the fingers. This adjustment can be done without taking the clutch apart.

Thanks everyone for chiming in. I was ready to take it all apart, but maybe I can get it fixed with out all that. I do have the pin in the bottom hole. and yes when I let the pedal up it seems to grab all at once. I am hoping that I can adjust the fingers on the clutch. Does anyone have an idea of how to do that? Honestly ,I had never heard of that.. I live in the little alien town of Roswell NM. Don't believe there is anyone close by that could help me. Thanks to all of you and hoping someone can give me the info. that I need

Does a 40 have the two rubber pads in the linkage like a step-down? I had to replace them (from Wildrick) to get a good adjustment on my 51.

Stan, you state you have the pin in the bottom hole. You must have it in the top hole to give you maximum movement. Try this first.

I moved the turnbuckle to the top hole and basicly I have the same problem. the best I can get is when the pedal is about half way up .if I turn it up then the pedal has to go up further to engage the clutch. I adjust it down about 2 turns and then the clutch is so tight I cant change gears. The pads on the paddle are pretty new and barley worn ,so I don't think that is the problem..Im open to any more suggestions, including adjustment of the fingers on the pressure plate. Thank agin to all of you. your a great bunch of guys

Mike, have you consulted the Mechanical Procedures Manual? (If you don't own one, there is a downloadable one here at the online library)

Stan,

I'm not clear from your description about how well the clutch works when it engages quite close to the top.

1) Does it engage smoothly, but engages higher than you would like?

2) Does it engage smoothly, but slips when you accelerate hard?

3) Does it shake or shudder as it is engaging?

4) Does it do something else?

You need to take it to Al Saffrahn in Maricopa, AZ. He can find the problem and fix it for you.

Yes, Per, I would say it is number one The pedal is up about half way and any other adjustment makes it worse. . It doesn't slip at all.
