BRAKE LIGHTS NOT WORKING

HI, I have a 1954 Hudson Jet the first time out I was told I did not have any brake lights. I replaced the switch then I had them working but now they stopped again. I have replaced the switch with a new one again and still have nothing. I have checked power to all the wires and I'm not getting power to brake lights but I am getting power to the brake switch. I have power to the tail lights (when turning them on the passenger side looks like them brake light is on). My question is there a fuse that I am missing that could be blown or is it just a short?
There is a junction box under the dash that looks to have mostly turn signal and brake light wires in it. Does anyone have the info on what wires are what in this junction box? Some of the wires are labeled by the previous owner and some of the tape has fallen off the others so it's hard to determine which are which.
Yes a new wiring harness is going to be ordered so that (hopefully) all these problems go away. But in the meantime i would like to continue to drive the car but can not until i have brake lights. I am sure this could be a number of things just wanting to check to make sure i am not missing something simple.
Thanks
Jason

Last time this happened to my 48 C8 there was a bunch of clotted debris in the master cylinder preventing the switch from activating.

Jason, make sure there are not any wire strands from one connection to the other on the "collector" under the dash that has all the turn signal wires plus the one wire from the brake light switch.

I had upgraded to DOT 5 fluid and could not keep brake lights working until I purchased a modern switch from Paul Schuster - no problems now for several years.....
