Thought I would start a new thread for visibility.
I have successfully removed the engine from my 53 Hornet. The transmission and the torus assembly are currently left in place in the car and now I wish to replace the Hydramatic front pump seal.

Having read the shop manual, it seems that removal of the torus sections and the torus cover involves removing the 1 7/16 nut, lock washer and then a snap ring. Once I have removed the torus and cover, I assume the pump seal will be visible and can be pulled out and a new one carefully tapped back into place. Is this correct? Am I correct in assuming that the pump seal, seats onto the torus cover?
Is there anything to watch out for on removing or refitting the torus and torus cover ?
The shop manual mentions aligning the splines of the torus cover with the splines of the front drive gear. Is there anything special to watch out for here?
Finally, is it OK to use automotive RTV silicon sealant on the torus to flywheel gasket or is something else recommended?

Thank you again for any advice.
Best regards, Brian.

We use #1 Permatex, put a thin coat on the flywheel, then install the gasket, then another thin coat on the top of the new gasket. MAKE sure you clean all old gasket from the flywheel and the torus bowl. Also make sure you do not damage the ribs in the 2 mating faces. These are what insure a good seal, grinding or polishing them off could allow a leak. If you had the flywheel off, make sure the mating flange between the crank and flywheel is also clean and sealed, again using #1 Permatex.

Thank you again Doug.

Best Regards,
Brian.

Yes, and if you look closely, the lip of the outside edge sticks out a slight amount. You can take a small chisel,or screwdriver and drive it outwards to remove. Make sure you clean all the old sealer out of the groove in the case. We take a little grease and put it on the complete tension spring inside the seal. The grease assist the spring staying in place while you tap/drive the new seal in. Use the grease sparingly, but make sure you coat the entire spring. Inspect it closely after the seal is installed to insure it didn't come off. MAKE sure you use sealer-[Permatex #1] or equivalent when re-installing it back into the case. If you don't seal it, it will likely leak under pressure.
