Michael,

When I cleaned out the gas tank on a 1949 Commodore 8 I had to replace the sending unit in the gas tank. I found that the unit
used in 1948-1952 Ford pickups (6 volt) fits perfectly onto the gas tank. Its resistance is 73 ohms down to 10 ohms. It works properly with the original Hudson gauge. I just checked the C & G Ford website, where its price is $39.50.

Hello,
Would the 1948-1952 Ford pickup fuel sending unit also fit in a 1953 fuel tank?

Thanks.

Jason,

I believe that the gas tanks are the same through 1954. Someone is making replacement gas tanks for stepdowns, and I think he said that they are all the same. ( It would be good if someone who knows this for sure could let us know!)

I have a 54 tank and earlier tank. The 54 gas tank is different because the filler neck is smaller in diameter and bent differently to come out on the earliier stepdown fender at a different location. No interchange possible unless filler necks are changed between 54 and earlier tanks. The 47 PU I bought had a stepdown tank already installed with altered filler neck. Don't know what was done to calibrate sender and gauge.

Lee,
Thanks for the information that 48 to 53 are the same tank.

Michael,
I am making the assumption that the mounting for the sender unit is the same for the 46 and 47 tanks as for the stepdown tanks (six threaded holes in a circular pattern). Ford listings show a similar sending unit which fits from 1936 to the end of the 6 volt Fords. Hopefully someone who knows the details can confirm this.

Per, those two screw hole patterns are indeed the same. I used a stepdown sender in my '47 for a while, and it fit perfectly (it didn't work well though . . . it was an experiment). And Michael, the '36-55 Ford sender is identical to the '36-'47 Hudsons. Both manufacturers got their gauge systems from the same company. So that's the one to use if your tank is a '47 or earlier. (You may have to play with the float arm elbow bend a little, but that's not difficult).
