I rebuilt my 1940 (175) engine and got it back in the car. I have tried to start it but every time it is ready to start ,the starter kicks out. I have had this problem before the engine was rebuilt. The starter was rebuilt and I took let back and they said there was nothing wrong with it
The starter number is 6006 which is from a 48 or 49 Hudson. It has 1/4 inch spacers between the starter and the bell housing. Could this be the problem? I'm open to all suggestions. Thanks for any help you can give me

You just answered your own question when you admitted you have the wrong starter for the car. Try and locate a MZ 4079A or Mz4092 starter that is correct for the Splasher Sixes of 175 & 212 cubic inches. Here's one on eBay:

If you can not copy and paste the above URL, go to eBay and type in the item number in the search box: 151963573259
We have a good used, ready to install starter for your car. The one on Ebay is not complete. Give us a call at 317-398-4163 or info@wrphet.com
The fact that the starter is not right for the engine has no bearing on the hard starting. I have a 212 engine in my workshop at the moment, and I fitted a Jet starter to it, which also has to have the spacers otherwise the collar of the starter back plate contacts the flywheel. It starts just fine. You need to look at the auto choke and ignition timing. it would seem that your engine is firing but not catching , and this causes the starter to kick out.

Thanks for the advice, I will be working on it again tomorrow
