Hello- I recently bought a 1951 hudson hornet sedan and am a new member to the H.E.T.Club. It is in very good original shape w/ a manual shift.
It sat in a garage for 3 years and the clutch is stuck. I saw in the maual that carbon tetrachloride
is one of the chemicals advised to clean the clutch out evey 5000 miles. However, cant find
carbon tetrachloride for the mix with acetone. Does anyone know of a good substitue for the carbon tetrachloride or a good tip to free the clutch?
I tried mixing brake cleaning fluid w/ acetone. It cleaned out the clutch but didnt free it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hope to drive it to the H.E.T. Chattanooga Meet in June.
Many thanks.

Welcome to the Club!

I'm not sure what the alternative to Carbon Tet is, nowadays. Someone had come up with one, a few years ago, but THAT was banned as well!

Have you allowed your solvent mixture to sit in the clutch for some time? Generally, I think people leave it in for a few days, rotating the clutch occasionally to allow the solvent to work into all the clutch corks. And of course you are supposed to occasionally work the clutch.

I think someone will jump in here before long, to make some suggestions on your solvent mixture.

Put in 1 pint of kerosene, hold clutch pedal to the floor and spin engine. Then use a stick to hold clutch pedal to the floor, pedal to the lower support of the front seat, then every once in awhile, spin engine. Do this for 2 days, then drain it good, then start engine and work clutch pedal up and down and it should release. Add 6 ounces of clutch fluid from Doug. I just did this on a 49 hudson that sat for 12 years, towed in and the owner drove it away. Walt.

Jay, I did all of the above and mine was still stuck. I then put a block under the front wheel and briefly engaged the starter with the car in 3rd gear-clutch pedal pushed in- and it popped loose. It took me 3 months so have patience. Terry

Jay,

If the engine can run, you could try this:

Jack up the rear of the car so the wheels are off the ground. Use secure supports under the rear axle.

Hold the clutch pedal down. Put the car in 3rd gear and start the engine. Speed up the engine so the speedometer says about 30 mph. While continuing to hold the clutch pedal down, press the brake pedal suddenly. This will put a lot of force on the clutch disk, and it should release. I have used this method successfully with a Volkswagen beetle, and with a Citroen. With Hudsons, the method Terry suggested has worked for me.

Jay, as Walt mentioned, make a stick and prop the clutch pedal down.Wedge it under the dash to the pedal. I believe Dry cleaning fluid is highly flammable, so be careful using any metal cans. We use any brake cleaner that sez it is high flammable, install the red plastic tube and spray the entire can into the flywheel fill hole. If you can, buy 2 cans of brake cleaner, fill it up until it starts coming out, install plug back into hole. Disconnecting the battery is recommended while putting in solvents . Are the brakes up on your car?. If they are, warm the engine to complete operating temp. turn off engine, then holding the brake pedal solid, put trans into 2nd. gear, try bumping the starter.- clutch pedal still propped or held down. If after a few days, even a week, and no help, you should plan to start removing the transmission. It's hard to determine what someone has done prior to you?. I hope this helps.
