So taking off the rubber coating and chasing existing rust out of the drain area just south of the A pillar on the passenger side I find an area that looks like it should be welded but looks to have some old broken welds. Russ I think you did this very repair on at least the driver side A pillar. On your blog I can see some welding visegrips holding various aspects of the joint together.
So the questions...
1. Does this need to be welded back up?
2. Anyone have a good way of removing the rubberized stuff besides a chisel and wire wheel?
3. What rubber product do I respray before repainting?
Thanks all... plus an update pic of where I am at. Thanks again for all your help and advice!
Ray

I spent many hours last summer removing the rubber-undercoating stuff from my Coupe project.
Best method a heat gun in 1 hand and an oscillating tool with a chisel blade in the other.
Some sort of mask that protects against chem vapors suggested.
I use an oxy-acetelene torch and a scraper. Takes it right off. Still a nasty job.
I spray an epoxy bedliner material back on. Super sticky and effective.
Ray, YES, this needs repaired/welded. This is very common, especially on convertibles. It is a good plan to make a support for the inside as well on convertibles. Do both sides while you are doing this.
Ditto all of the above.
Thanks all... got to buy a welder and teach myself with a bunch of scrap. 🙂
