Rob,
If you raised the car and had only one wheel spinning, the spider gears would be in full function mode, which generates quite a growl since they are spur/bevel gears. This isn't normally heard in ordinary driving cause they are only moving in turns and very slightly all of the time to take up differences in rear wheel diameters (there's always a little). Even with both wheels off the floor, there will be quite some difference in wheel speeds, thus causing the growl to a lesser degree.

Thank you Doug.

I'll look into the wheels.

Frank,

I thought that might have something to do with the noise...
Thank you for explaining it for me.

Doug,

Nothing shows up in a search for "classic wheel".

Is it an online store?

Rob,
I sorta abbr. that explanation. The differential side gears (the ones that the axle splines engage) are also straight-cut bevel gears (maybe not the correct terminology). The meshing of those with the spider gears is what generates the racket. Imagine an old movie with lots of 30s vintage cars in it, starting off from a stop. First and second howl (isn't that a great sound!?) due to the spur type gears in #1 & #2 but third is direct and passes through no gear reduction so it's quiet. There.....more than you wanted to know. Just don't ask me what time it is. I don't have time to tell you how to make a watch.

Frank,

My 28 Packard makes great "howls" in 1st and 2nd gear. Music to the ears!

The howl of a Essex box in 2nd has to be heard to be believed - magnified by the quietness of top (3rd) gear..

Yep. I've had the privilege of driving some very special cars before, and with just a couple of exceptions that were comparable, none of them were a Hudson. But then again, I AM biased.
