I just noticed that you mention cleaning up the points. Did you put in new points when you put new plugs in? I've sometimes not been successful getting a really good spark from points that I have cleaned up.

I checked all and believe it was a bad condenser...filed the points, regapped, checked rotor and wires, checked timing and then replaced the condenser. Amazing how much difference that makes on these old cars.

Mine does seem to like it better with chokes closed initially. have played around with the adjustment
