My continued journey down the rabbit hole has led me to this. Before disassembly there was no visually noticeable shift but you can feel it just move a couple of hairs if you know what I mean. You can feel a tiny tiny amount of play but not see any. So dumb questions time...

1. Is this worn out?

2. Is there a way to check it to make sure?

3. If not should I replace the needle bearings?

4. Oh! And my pitman arm had remnants of gold paint, The same color as the engine. Is this proper or should it be black?

Thanks again...

Ray

Looks like someone painted the engine while it was in the engine bay? I think hudson engines were painted on the assembly line before installation?
While you have the steering pivot out, now is the time to install a new one. That one does look pitted pretty good.

Ray,

What feels like a little bit of play causes a noticeable up and down movement of the center arm where the tie rods connect to it. Up and down movement there becomes quite a lot of play at the steering wheel. If in doubt, buy the kit!

I concur with Per! A little movement here translates to a lot in the wheel and in your front end.
