Anyone have a source for original (or close to original) fabric for a 1940 Deluxe 6 coupe?

Also, any way to know what the original flooring would have been (rubber, carpet)?

As to flooring, I'd guess that it was rubber in front, carpet in the back. But someone will chime in here soon, with the real answer.

As to the availability of fabrics, you might cut a small piece from a concealed place, and send it to SMS fabrics, they stock and manufacture a lot of specialty antique car fabrics, including for Hudsons. http://www.smsautofabrics.com/ .

Just make sure that the upholstery on your seats is original, and wasn't installed in the 50's or 60's!

Hmmm. Given the condition of the rest of the seat (not pictured) I wouldn't have guessed that it has been replaced, but that may be the case.

I did get some samples from SMS, which were not too similar.

Any way to figure out what original would have looked like?

Or otherwise just find something I like.

If you are going to the expense of reupholstering, and you intend to keep the car original looking, I would definitely go with a similar if not identical fabric if at all possible. The cost is in the labor; the material cost is secondary, and if you end up with seats that don't look quite right, just to save $50 or $100 on the whole job, you are going to have to live with your decision for as long as you own the car.

And you will live with it when you go to sell the car, as well. Assuming the potential buyer is looking for an original-looking car (as opposed to wanting to street rod it), a mis-matching fabric is going to lower the value of the car to him/her.

In the end, it's all up to you. You gotta do what you want to do, but you should always consider the consequences before moving forward.

As to the front mat (if indeed that was what was used in 1940), Doug makes them with the original "Hudson Built Steel Body" logo embossed in the middle, which I believe would have been original (or at least it's the closest you'll find, nowadays).

However, I'd suggest you locate a '40 in original condition (with any luck there would be one located not too far from you) and look it over. You can find these by either looking in the H-E-T Roster (if you're a Club member) or consulting the 1940 registry which is here on-line, under the "Member" drop-down at the top of this page.

If you can find the correct original material, SMS will custom make it for you for an upcharge per yard. I don't remember how much it is, but is a very small addition to the overall cost of redoing the interior. Well worth the effort and cost.
