I was responsible for bringing Smokey to the 1999 Meet. I was a VP at SEMA at the time, and I convinced Prolong (Smokey was a spokesperson for them) to pay all the expenses for him and his wife to come up from Florida. Despite the heat, he really enjoyed himself. I knew Smokey well...I used to bring him to the SEMA Show to do Seminars. One year I had Ivan Zaremba's (then) stepdown racecar placed in the show entrance and had Press Kale's '34 Pickup in the Coker display. Jack Clifford was there...he was a founding exhibitor. Several HET Club Members attended, so it was a fun time.
Dave,
Am getting them reproduced on Monday. Will probably be mailed Tues or Wed. Will let you know the total cost.

I got a chance to talk with him at Nashville - two old pharts couldn't hear each other worth a damn!!! LOL Was a nice conversation, tho. Smoky was quite the operator. He had a counterpart up in Atlanta - fellow by the name of Jerome "Red" Vogt. Smoky knew him well; said he learned a lot from Red. Vogt did things to the flat head Ford V-8 that Ford engineers said was impossible. Sounds like Smoky, doesn't it?? Red built a lot of engines for the moonshine runners.
Glad I got a chance to meet Smoky and talk to him.

Richard, NASCAR wouldn't have gotten off the ground without the money supplied by Ray Parks. The reason there isn't much known about the Park/France connection is because Parks was deep into running moonshine. France was adamant, at the organization that moonshine trippers would not be welcome in NASCAR - until somebody pointed out he was going to lose 3/4 of his drivers!!!! The moonshine connection is NASCAR's dirty little secret. France wanted a family friendly sport and the running shine was not what he wanted to have. So most of the early drivers were shine trippers, but it was buried deep in the early days. Of course with mechanics like Smoky and Vogt the NASCAR rule book grew like topsy. Early NASCAR years were wild and far from the image France finally got.

Ivan,
A check is ok. If you have pay pal and want to use it, please send money as a gift to lauriefromm05@gmail.com as a friend/family.
Thank you,
John
I just got my disk and it's an absolute must-have! Smokey is funny, gets technical, presents the early history of NASCAR as only he can! Best $19.95 I've spent in a long time!!!
Sam,
Glad you enjoyed it. Smokey was quite the character. I am so glad I was there to tape his presentation. If you want more, you should read his book Best Damn Garage in Town.
Checks' in the mail, John.
I haven't watched it yet, waiting for a time when I can take it all in. Thank you...k
