Anyone have a cross reference and supplier for front shocks for a '54 Jet? It was pretty easy to find the rear shocks, but I have not found any leads on the front.
I have reference for NAPA Regal Ride F1670
Thanks, Geoff. I had that reference, but can't seem to locate any Regal Ride shocks. Wondering if anyone has had any luck with something else.
Joe,
I haven't found any by application but I did come up with a NAPA p/n by using dimensions. They are Monroe Gas Magnum, billed as "RV" shocks and I believe are intended for retro-fitting to trailers. I haven't actually used them yet so I can't vouch for their performance, although I can't see why they wouldn't do just fine. The ends are 3/8-16 instead of the original fine thread but who cares. Nitrogen charged also. You probably won't find them in stock but ask for 555-001. Not cheap, either, but what is? Gas?

About 20 years ago I replaced the shocks on my Super Jet with the following: Front was Monroe #J973 and the rears were Monroe #J800. They are still going strong, but the car has only seen approximately 30,000 miles in the last 20 years!
Thanks Frank and Jerry--after a little digging into Sarah Young's JetSet site, I found this info:
Rear Shocks - Monroe 31125
Front Shocks- Monroe 31176
I found Rear shocks a few months ago and replaced the old ones-pretty simple replacement (except for crawling into the trunk!).
I was able to find some front shocks (Monroe 31176) on the internet for $12 each. The shocks came yesterday, and I put them on today. Seem to fit pretty well, although I did have to shave a little bit off the top bushing. We'll have to see how they ride after I finish a few more projects on the car (and the weather gets a little nicer).
Jerry- do you still do the registry for Jets? If so, what info do you need?
Boy did I get outdone! I guess I need to go back and beat up my counterguy at NAPA. I see that amongst a gazillion others, they are for the '75-'80 Dodge Aspen front, in case you need to do it by make/year/model. Parts guys don't seem to understand any other approach. I have found that they have a lot of Hudson parts.....they just don't know it.

However, in my defense, I did make the 555001 determination based upon dimensions gleaned from a shock taken from a Jet moments before. Although there is no guarantee that it was correct for the Jet (it appeared to be original)it dimensionaly is a reasonable match for the 555001 at 7.125" compressed, 10.625" extended, for a 3.5" travel. The 31176 is 7.375", 11.875" and 4.0", respectively. Having a 3/4" longer compressed length could pose a problem if the shock is fully collapsed before the suspension bottoms out. That could break something, probably shove the lower shock mount out of the "A" arm. Just my opinion. One out of many.

Frank,
I like your thinking on all this. You may be correct about the 'bottoming out'. I'm just going to give these a try, and watch them closely. One other thing I considered, since I found it on the JetSet site, I'm guessing someone has used these on their Jets.
Keeping in mind that we are working on 60 plus (or more) year old cars in our Club, we need to sometimes do our best to find things that work! As you stated in an earlier post, the 'counter guys' often give you a funny look when you say 'Hudson' (or try Essex for a laugh). A number of times I have gone to the auto store, gave the car info to the guy-he enters it in his computer, then tells me they have 'nothing' that fits. I asked if I could go back and look, and to their surprise, I come out with a match.
The great thing about the HET Club and this site is the many experts who can chime-in with what they know, and have used.
I do appreciate your responses to my question and your thought processes. Keep'em coming!!
@Joe - Yes, I am still doing the registry for all Jet models. I need the Year model, serial number of your car, whether a Sedan, Club Sedan (2 Dr.), Utility Sedan (2 Dr.) and series (Jet, Super Jet or JetLiner). With this info I can get your car registered.
