How do you know if you need to replace the steering jacket tube bearing?
The book explains how, but that is all.
The steering wheel/steering tube feels tight, and it doesn't rattle that I can tell, but sometimes when you hit a bump it feels like a vibration carried up the tube, or in the dash area, really hard to tell.

The steering tube bearing is more of a cone-shaped hollow bushing than an actual bearing. Needs to be greased but that's all. Held in by spring under steering wheel, and centers shaft in tube. If you are having problems with tightness or vibration I would think the steering box is a more likely source

David,

Thank you.

I am in the process of replacing the old steering gearbox with a rebuilt one.
Trying to get it all right the first time...

Pulled the gearbox and steering tube today.

There is a bearing in the tube, in addition to the cone shaped spacer. It is a ball bearing. I cleaned the old grease out and put new in, turns very smooth and easy now!

That's interesting, Rob. I don't recall a bearing being in there, mine seems to be working perfectly. Glad you worked it out, and sorry for the bad info.

Dave,

No worries 🙂

Its all a learning experience for me...
Now that I have the new gearbox in, the rattle and vibration are gone.
