A recent post asked about the SUPER marking on a cylinder head (I think that was it). I've forgotten the year. I'm in the process of scanning a group of Hudson-Essex Service Bulletins from 1932. One of them, Essex-Terraplane Service Hints, has this to say about the markings:
"You will find that with the standard head and Ethyl fuel you will to able to obtain best performance by setting the timing near the rnark, which 3/4 inch ahead of dead center; while with standard gas in a standard head and Ethyl gas in the Super Power Dome head it will be necessary try to retard the spark nearer to the dead center position to prevent excessive detonation."
Hope this makes sense. Of course these days we have a choice of 3 blends at most pumps so we will have to adjust the timing on these older cars to conform with todays fuels.
Hudsonly,
Alex B
P.S. If anyone has any of these service bulletins from the 1930's we'd surely love to copy them for the online library so that our members with cars of this era will be able to better maintain their cars.
