Hi All..I just purchased a 1951 club coupe. I want to put larger than stock tires on it. Any information on large I can go?
Thank You
Steve, I recently had some wide whitewalls tires put on my stepdown from Diamondback tires in Conway ,S.C. Nice people to deal with BUT be aware that you only have a certain amount of room on a stock stepdown rear wheel well to work with,.I had a set of Dayton tires I bought from them a number of years ago and they worked great so when they said another set could be had for another stepdown I have I said fine lets do that.( 225 75 R15) The tires arrived and I had them mounted and was ready to install them This time they were Toyo tires. Same size as the earlier set.. However they were too wide for the rear of the car. No way were they going on. I subsequently ordered a narrower set than the 225's and they worked. Long story short make sure your rear tire INFLATED width does not exceed the width of the wheel well on the rear of your car. Different manufacturers size differently so be aware.
Concur with Lance, tho I am running Coker WWW 235 radials without any driving problems at all. The spare will not fit in the 'hole' in the trunk if that bothers someone. If I replaced the set, and I never expect to, I would buy 215's. But NEVER Cokers. Would buy Diamondbacks. Never changed the tires on the road & I never want to do that; they are very heavy for an old man. I do carry Slime and a compressor that might help. Suggest scissor jack AND bumper jack be carried and be used. Call a rollback on an interstate; much too dangerous not to. My 4ยข.
Lance what size did you wind up getting & from who?
regards
J
J, They came from Diamondback Tires in Conway, S.C. . size was 215/75/115/100 DB ll 2.75" whitewall TOYO. tires. Nice people to deal with
My experience with my '51 Hornet agrees with Lance's. 215s are the largest you can install that can be removed in the normal manner. And I agree on the merits of Diamondbacks. Have had them on both cars for about five years now. Smooth as silk on the road, and the whitewall seems to stay white for very long periods compared to experience with other make tires.
Those that go bigger than 215 are asking for trouble. Get a flat in the rain and try to install the spare if the same size. Do not install a smaller size than what is on the other rear hub as that can break the spider gears, then you have trouble. Walt.
