Vintage Air heat / defrost switch needs sorting

The Vintage Air unit was installed in my '52 Hornet a couple of owners ago. It cools just fine. Moving the control to heat doesn't direct the air flow downward, and also doesn't heat. Moving the control to defrost directs the air flow downward (instead of to the defroster vents) and I get some heat but not much. I've looked under the dash at the vacuum hoses and everything seems to be hooked up, but something's obviously not working correctly.

I'm assuming I have a universal model but I don't see any identifying labels, and I've been on the Vintage Air website hoping to find a schematic or troubleshooting guide for the controls, but the organization logic of their site is a mystery to me.

I figured I could give Vintage Air a call next week, but thought I'd first find out if anyone might know what's going on. One hose coming into the mixing valve (if that's what it's called) under the dash is nice and hot, and another one is warm. Just seems like a vacuum or valve or both maybe kind of problem...

There's still at least a month of potential Wisconsin driving before I have to put the Hornet up for the winter, and it would be nice to have warm feet and a defroster. Hoping someone with Vintage Air has encountered something like this or has some troubleshooting ideas.

Thanks, Chris

Chris,

Does the car still have the original heater box?
If so, there is a control lever to direct the airflow to defrost that may be in that position.

If you have the heat/cool Vintage air unit it uses the new unit's heater core.
If you have a defrost control on the Vintage air unit, then that must be the case.
If the valve is hot on one side but not the other, then the lever control connection is bad, or the valve is bad.

Thanks Rob.
I received some good help from Vintage Air support specialist Mark Hungerford. After identifying the model, Mark sent me the schematic. There are two vacuum solenoids for this model. After seeing the schematic I noticed that the vacuum hose from the intake manifold was incorrectly routed directly to the Heater Control Valve instead of to the two vacuum solenoids, which would explain why things aren't working right. Mark said that sometimes the solenoids can stick and need a tap from a hammer, but I'll first get the plumbing routed correctly and go from there.

That's old school, man! Just rap it with a hammer and it will work. LOL!

Chris,

Glad to hear about the good customer service!

Hope it turns out to be an easy fix.
I sure like mine! Cools off the car in just a few minutes.

How I unstick my carb floats come springtime. Sad that it's my most effective tool.

Sure. The first link is for Heat/Cool and the second is for Heat/Cool/Defrost. Scroll down for the schematic. The main difference is two servos in the schematic for Heat/Cool/Defrost, and only one servo for Heat/Cool
