I have three six cylinder Hudsons, one is Twin-H 308 with iron head, cast numbers on side of block 193 310111 cwc 2,top to bottom, stamped number is 7282851,the other's have heads off,Cast number H304 310111 cwc 2,stamped number 6315508,and cast number D83 304539 cwc 2,stamped number 265470. I probably have the heads here and is there anyway to tell if these two engines had iron or aluminum heads.Just trying to get years mainly. Thanks,Dan

Dan, This info is in Alex Burrs collection in the club library. Seems to be a bit of a pain to hunt it up, so here goes.
#1 I93 is the casting date, translates to Sept 9th, 1953. casting # 310111 is a 1954 model 308 cu in.
#2 H 304 was cast on Aug. 30 of 1954. casting # 310111 is a 1954 308.
#3 D83 was cast on April 8th 1953. Its casting # 304539 was used on 51-53 Hornets.
The 310111 was only used for 1954 model year Hornets. These should have the deeper relief between valves and cylinder.
Hope this helps!

"Ric"

Engine Id codes can be found here:

Engine Id Codes

Also Alex has created an index of the manuals in the library which can be found here; it's searchable:

Library Online Index

The library also has a search function so if you type code in there it gets 2 hits. One is the "Hudson built Vehicle Year-Make-Model matrix" and the other is "Hudson Engine ID Codes"

Hudson engines came with iron or aluminum. Iron was standard and aluminum was an option. Walt.

Ditto what Walt said ! One other way I have found?. Look for pry marks on the deck of the block, maybe some broken off head bolts, or bolts drilled off center horribly, and that engine probably had an aluminum head ! No stamping on the vin code, build sheet only.
ALSO worth mentioning-Thanks "RIC" for all your casting's research!!
