[quote="Rob Hesselmann " post=13679]Took the car and camper on its first camping trip this last week. 70 miles out, and 70 back.Hitch didn't fall off... Car had plenty of power to pull the 2400 pounds.
Grandkids had a great time; we went to the Newport Indiana antique auto hill climb.

We didn't participate in the timed event (officially, as it is tomorrow) we did give it a go a couple days before, made the hill in 34 seconds.Record holder is 22 seconds. Still fun! 😉

And the wandering problems?.
My Dad ran his '37 H8 sedan up the hill last year. He set a new class record, 28.3 , or something like that. Jeff Perkins was there, said he ran the heck out of it ! He is there right now-Sunday-. I told him NOT to run it that hard again, probably will not listen, or listen as good as I did when I was a teenager with my '49C8 ?

Doug,

The hill, the competition, the spectators have a way of making one throw caution to the wind...

Of the many cars I've run, the 22 Hupmobile was the most fun. It was the slowest, which gave us more time to wave to everyone as we putted up the hill. 😉

The wander is still present...
We're installing new rear springs this afternoon, along with the front spring eye rubber bushings you sent me.
I'm really hoping that the old ones are badly worn and that will cure the wander, if not, next up is the steering gearbox.
I pulled the end plate off and checked for shims. There were no shims, just several gaskets. I removed a gasket and put it back together; it was too tight. Put the gasket back and left it alone.
We're going to look over the kingpins/bushings/bearings today too.
We put all new in, but there is still a lot of movement when grabbing the tires at 2 and 7, and 10 and 4.
It seems like the play is in the kingpin area, but I could be mistaken, so will let someone with more experience than me have a look.
There is no "wobble" at any speed, so it may well be a different issue.

Rob

Got the new rear springs installed, rides nice!
The bushings were somewhat worn, though not badly. Changing them helped no doubt.
Panhard bar bushings checked out good.
We rechecked the front end. Kingpins are good.
Chased the looseness to (at least) the bushings in the steering gearbox, the one that holds the shaft that the Pittman arm connects to.
By turning the wheels all the way in one direction, and shaking the wheels, the play in the box became evident. Without turning the wheels all the way the play was harder to chase.
