Trailer hitch for my Hudson

As some of you may know from previous posts, it is my intent to pull a small camping trailer with my Hudson.

Since the local car parts stores don't stock such an item, it was required that I design, and fabricate one...
With help and pictures from several of you here on the board, and studying the available designs for modern cars, I created and installed one.

I used 1/4" plate, and 1/4" square tube.

Here are some pictures of the result;
Bear in mind that I am not a professional fabricator, and I make no claims as to the suitability of the design for use by others, I'm just sharing my hitch building adventure.

Rob

The board won't allow all the picture links in one post...?

Rob, I like your design. Is the middle section that holds the draw bar being supported/attached to the parameter frame? Most of the towing pressure will be in that section. I can't tell by the pictures.
It looks like the end side plates bolt to the parameter frame? If so, once bolted in place, (using one washer per bolt between plate and frame to serve as a spacer) I'd weld the bar to the end plates and make one unit that can be unbolted from the frame rails and just moved on and off if needed as one strong piece. Assuming your welds are good with proper penatration, this should be fine for pulling a small trailer. For pulling a larger trailer, I'd probably use a bigger piece of square tubing.

Hi Kerry,

The end plates are bolted to the main frame, not the perimeter frame. I considered also adding a support brace to the perimeter frame where the bumper bracket bolts on, but after installing it and doing some tests, I'm going to wait to see if it is really needed.
That brace, if installed would be 3" further out that the 2" square tube, helpful for sure, but since my tongue weight is 280 pounds, 2400 overall, I'm going to try it as is.
I considered welding it all as a unit, but the fuel filler tube and the perimeter frame bracing in the rear are in the way.
I could have welded it directly to the frame, but want it to be removable.

Thank you for the tips!

Rob

Rob, actually the 2" x 1/4" tubing is plenty strong. It looked smaller to me in the pictures. Yes, I agree that being able to unbolt and remove if needed is the way to build it, I hate welding a hitch to frame and won't do it. With only 280lbs tounge weight, what you already have is overkill! Everyone that I have seen (pulling very light trailers or tear drop camper) had the hitch bolted to the bumper and inside to the parameter frame overhead and didn't have the side arms at all.

Excellent information, Rob. You sure are staying on point with the car !!
May I suggest you use Picasa or Google+ for you photo albums. Can have by subject and have 500+ in an album if you want. NO cost. That way, all you have to do is post the link to the site without all the hassle. Can add photos as you want;also, add comment at each photo.
NOTE: if you click on the check mark, upper right, then click slideshow, each photo will go to FULL screen. AND folks can save the link under their Hudson folder to refer back to--very difficult to go back to ones here in six months or so. you know you saw them, but where??
Maybe you can write the dimensions on the white board pattern so we will know more. Thanks so much for posting.
Here is example of an album>>

Richard,

Thank you!

I'll try to do a nice drawing.

I have Photobucket and Shutterfly accounts, and Picasa too... Sometimes I'll post links to them, but I don't always want to share all the photos in all the albums, which is what can happen when the link is shared (once there anyone can browse all). I realize I can make them private, but then when I want to share one of them, it is locked...
Your idea/thoughts are good, and I appreciate them! 🙂
This is the first board I've ever joined that won't allow me to post multiple photo links?

Rob

Thanks, Rob. I had several of my albums labeled "public"; changed all back to 'limited by link'; so none should be visible other than the one in the link I share. Will have to double-check that from another computer.
excellent drawing; you could hire-out !! Now for me to save all your photos here to my Hudson file for safe keeping.

Interesting saga on your front end--you are persistant; I am having a crazy saga on my non-functioning gas gage; and now I am told by an expert that it might be upside down since it reads full with ignition off !!! NEVER ENDS~~~ no one comment on this except by PM; not to highjack thread.

Richard,

Thanks.

I have a large amount of money...all my old car savings, invested in this car. This car which is not fun nor comfortable to drive.
But it will be. Big question is how much it will cost. It will drive as close to new in the end as possible, since nearly everything has been replaced since I bought it. This on a "restored" car...
Just crummy that I didn't have the sense to realize the steering was such an issue, and that the seller either knew and withheld or didn't have a clue, all of which are pretty bad.

No problem with the hijack, there are many posts and problems that overlap, no need to fuss over an old car question on an old car board...

I'll look into the limited by link option.

Rob

Rob, would be curious if you click my google+ link and see if you can see more than one album; the one on the car show. If you can't, then all is well and my 60+ albums are limited by link. tks.

Richard,

When you first posted the link, I was able to view several of your albums.

Currently, your albums, including the one you originally linked to, are invitation only.
You do have an un-blocked you tube video though.
