Doug,

I'm looking forward to checking the condition of "Doc" with you.
I'll be checking in at the Elegante Tuesday. My cell phone number is 857 225 0600.

[quote="J Lombard" post=12595]Eddie

In an earlier thread when I was initially wiring the car I asked if there was a polarity issue with the starter solenoid the indication was "no" just make sure it was a 6v solenoid. I went down to the local O'reilly parts house & got a 6v starter solenoid, installed it per the Hudson wiring diagram. You see the results.

J

What's the brand and part # of the solenoid you bought?

Eddie I bought the solenoid at O'Reilly Auto. The only part number on it is 6v 1409.

Does anyone with the correct starter solenoid have the part no. & source? If I can get the correct solenoid this might help clear up the problem & I can get on to actually starting this old girl.

just for info:

I took the solenoid completely out & checked for continuity. Power side to st post I have continuity, st post to the mounting bracket (ground) I have no continuity. So my conclusion is when installed & hooked up I will have power to the st terminal because of the continuity but it will not operate because there is no continuity to ground. Thus when I jump from the st terminal to either the pos. post (ground) or the mounting bracket (ground) the solenoid operates. Sound logical ???? If so I need to find the correct ground based solenoid.

Did you do what I told you?
Did you get 6v on the disconnected small wire to the ignition with the key in the start position only? (a good thing)
Did you get 6v on the small solenoid terminal with the wire off? (a bad thing)
Did you run a wire from the solenoid base to the battery ground and reconnect the small wire?
Did your starter turn after doing this?

The solenoid you bought had to come in a box with a brand on it
If the solenoid is wrong you can try NAPA Echlin ST 61

Go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap VOM or if you have a coupon they're free with any purchase.

J,

It is therefore a Ford solenoid, as several people have mentioned.

Try Echlin ST 61 as Eddie suggests. I'd like to know if that works, if you get it.
I like NAPA because they have points for many old cars, including my '35 Hudson.
Will you be coming to Colorado?

Eddie, I was getting 6v with the st (small) terminal on or off & no matter what position the ign. switch is in. I believe this is because there is continuity between the st terminal & the Batt. terminal of the solenoid & the reason that the solenoid doesn't operate is because there is no continuity between the st terminal & grnd. to close the circuit. The solenoid I bought did come in a box but I through that away some time ago. Lesson learned maybe I should hang on to those things 'til all is checked out & working. I do have a VOM meter that is how I'm getting all these readings. Thanks for the help I'm off to find a correct solenoid. I'll keep everyone posted.

regards

J

The reason I asked about who made the solenoid is I could have just looked it up in an interchange book and found out exactly which one you bought. The new Echlin part does not have the button on the bottom as they stopped making that type in the 1960's or 1970's. (unless someone started making cheap ones in China)

Good Luck

Eddie, I just went to NAPA & they couldn't find Echlin ST61. He looked up '53 Hudson Hornet & came up with ST58. I checked it out with my VOM & determined it was ground based. I'll put it in today & report back

St 58 is a 6v grounded base solenoid for 1952 - 55 Ford Lincoln Mercury. It should work just fine on your car. I think the body is a bit longer and the mounting bracket might be in a different position. What happened to the one that came with the car?

Good Luck

Eddie, I put it in a box with several other parts a few years ago when I dismantled the car & I'll be darned if I can find the box. So I've had to located several other parts that were in that same box. You watch as soon as I get this old girl running I'll find that box

Eddie, I'm waiting for my ignition switch to get back from Lance. As soon as I get it I'll stick it in & then I'll update with results.
