My windshield wipers are acting strangely. The wipers on the convertible (as far as the cables go) are hooked up just like on my sedan. However, the passenger side wants to go up, but the driver side wants to rotate downward. Why is that?

Yes, thanks. I of course, HAVE a Hudson Body Manual and with about 95% of what's in there, it's not worth a DAMN unless you want to remove something and then "Reverse the above procedure" to re-install. The manual tells me nothing about why one wiper operates one way and the other the opposite.

Russ, check the cables where they go thru the firewall. It is very easy to get them crossed. If that is Ok, they could be a re-cabled unit and someone has the long and short mixed up when it was assembled, but really sounds a simpe as the cables are crossed.

If I remember correctly, the is a RH and a LH. Maybe you have 2 lefts or 2 rights installed.

Doug is correct. The cable is reversed under the dash. Walt.

It's been a long time since I worked on step down wipers. I thought the only cable that went thru the firewall was the one to open the vacuum on the motor. The cables that run to the left & right wiper transmissions are on the engine side of the firewall. It is almost impossible to reverse the cables without knowing. The only way it could happen is if the cables are reversed inside one of the transmissions.

I could be wrong.

I just realized what the solution is.
Remove the wiper arm on the side that wants to go down when you turn the wipers on. Cycle the wipers once to reset. Reinstall the arm in the correct position. The arm was installed incorrectly.

This doesn't sound right, Eddie. What keeps the gear from going right back where it was (after it's cycled) before you removed the wiper arm?

Russ

The wiper ARM sits on the spline shaft attached to the wiper transmission, which attaches to the vacuum motor. If you are sure that the cables are the same as your other car, then the ARMS have to be installed wrong. To make it easier, remove BOTH wiper ARMS and cycle the wipers so they return to the park position. Then re install the arms to the park position. They will now be in sync.

Good Luck

The problem is they are both operating in a counterclockwise fashion AT THE SAME TIME . . . which is wrong. The passenger side needs to operate in a counterclockwise direction, but the driver side needs to operate in a clockwise direction (when viewed from the front of the car). Merely changing the position of the wiper arms is not going to change the direction of rotation.

Russ

Did you do what I told you or are you just stating what should be happening?

If what I said didn't work, then remove both arms and run the wiper.
1. The shafts should turn in opposite directions
2. When the top of the wiper motor goes right, the bottom goes left.

If #2 doesn't work then you have the wrong wiper motor.

If #2 works but #1 doesn't, then it's like the others are saying, you have the cables reversed (which is hard to do) or the wiper transmission is bad

If both #1 & #2 are good then shut the wipers off and install the arms in the off position.

.

Doe sound like they are cross under the dash, as Doug says easy to do and seems to happen to me about 50% of the time I do one,

Russ and Lisa,

You can get the wipers to work by removing the driver's arm, and putting it at the full up position. As you start the wipers, the passenger side will work as usual, moving upward from the parked position. The driver's side will move downward from its top position towards the parked position.

The disadvantage of this is that when the wipers are not running, the driver's side arm and blade will be in its upward position.

This way you can drive in the rain until you solve the problem.

I finally got around to fixing this problem, sort of. Whomever said that the wires were crossed (think it was Russ Maas or Doug), that was it. Uncrossed the cables and hooked them back up. Unfortunately, two or three of the strands have broken and the wiper only goes up about halfway and then back down. I've got to find another short set of cables.

Russ, you might check with Joe Stinnett in FL. A few years ago Joe bought the spares stock from Herbert Bell, and it included some NOS cables or cable sets for various Hudson models.
