Car is 49 Convertible with single lever transmission. Everything was working fine until about two weeks ago, I suddenly couldn't shift into reverse or first. I can pull the shifter lever back (or up), but it will not rotate into 1st or second. I never heard any clicking sounds when shifting or going into freewheel mode. At this point, I can drive in second and third, and OD works as it should, but I still hear no clicking sounds from the solenoid. I pulled the solenoid out and it wasn't physically damaged, but I don't know how to test it.
I suspect the problem is in the linkage, but the cable seems as tight as it can get. I wish I could find a mechanic to fix the sucker, as at my age, I don't easily fit under a car or hood.
Any ideas as to what I should do?
Jim
Jim,
It really is just a matter of adjusting the linkage. It could also be that you really should take the entire shifter apart and clean/lubricate all the moving parts (there are some moving parts in the shifter shaft). I had to fiddle around with mine a few times to find the exact sweet spot where all shifts were easy. If you do decide to take apart the shifter, it's a bit more work and sounds like you want some help with that. But you should be able to adjust the shift to go into 1st or reverse. You need a partner to shift while you adjust the cable setting, or vice versa. I'm in the NW or I would help you with that. Be sure you have a manual -- that is helpful.
I can't reach the places I need to reach. Is access best from above or below? I love the old car, and it is a head turner for sure. I wish I had this car when I was 18.. It is surprisingly complicated for a car made in 1949.

Below, especially if you have a lift, or access to one. Great looking car, Jim!
Jim,
I see that you reside in North Carolina, are you a member of the Dogwood Chapter of the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club? Your local chapter probably has a few mechanics that would be glad to assist you. Would you be interested in having someone contact you?
John Forkner
I joined HET, but have had no contact with the regional Dogwood Club.
I fixed it. I had my neighbor operate the lever wile I observed how the system functioned. After looking the system over, I loosened the two Philips head machine screws located at the top of the little shift tube. I pushed it down as far as it would go, and it was fixed!!
I just got back from a ride with Boo, and it is hot as Hades. Some people I didn't know flagged me down when I went by the courthouse square, and asked me if I wanted my car to be in a movie they were making (common around here). I have seen how they treat those cars, and said no. I will be glad when fall arrives.
Yes. Please hook me up with a good mechanic.
Jim
Your car looks exquisite. Saw the pics taken while being restored and the video. Nice.
