I have a 1954 Hudson Hornet Coupe 308 Six with twin H power. I am trying to find the best place to buy univeral joints and the carrier bearing for the car. I have some vibration and chatter when i start moving and I think these need replaced. Rockauto shows tww U joints but I sometimes second quess stores when they say they have it and then they dont fit. Looking for some guidance here guys!
Hi Robert,
I recently inspected mine and found the U joints were okay, but the carrier bushing holder was loose, and the drive shaft sections were out of phase.
You may or may not have bad U joints...you can check by grabbing the shafts and twisting to look for play.
Could be the rubber bushings are shot, or missing, which would make the drive shaft's jump around a bit.

The U-joints Hudson used from '36 through '54 are the same, and they're a type that is still in wide use today, including many non-automotive applications. So, very easy to find. One app is '62-'72 Camaro, Chevelle. NAPA 10153 was a good number as of a few years ago. I have 88506 for the center driveshaft brng. There are two different size bearings used. The referenced one is 2.44" outer diameter; the other one (88507) is 2.83". Measure yours first.
In my experience, vibration when starting out is often one (or both) of the center-bearing support cushions broken loose.
Robert,
In case you do need any U-joints,
I just used to ask for a 1973 Jeep U-joint. I bought them from the J. C. Whitney catalog, which had a very good price.
Jeeps used this joint for many years.
Per
AMGAUGE J5-153 U joint
88107 was center bearing
53 HH sedan, 308 Hydramatic
the above worked for me!
