Have pulled the drum and all the good stuff off my 37 Hudson terraplane rear axel but don't see how to get to the bearing. The Back plate seems to have two large rivets holding it on even when the four bolts are removed. Any suggestion and guidance would be appreciated.
You don't need to do anything with the backing plate. Bearing is a slight press fit into the axle housing, so pulling the axle (with bearing) is your next step. I assume you've already got the axle/bearing retainer cap already removed (4 nuts). Here's a puller I improvised, with a piece of 3/8" plate and a couple of 1/2" Grade 8 bolts and nuts. Running the nuts out on the bolts puts outward pressure on the plate. Works pretty well.
I like that, Park. I hope you don't mind me stealing your design.
Separate question for you (should be on separate site). I don't like the horns on 12V- too loud and raspy. Is there an appropriate voltage reducer? If not, would it work if I wired them in series, isolating one from ground?
You can rest easy, David . . . the puller's not patented!
On the horns, the series connection would probably work OK. When I converted my '51 I did have to play with the horns' vibrator adjustment just a little to bring them back to sounding normal. Give that a try. And if you go with the series hookup, let me know how it worked.
Imitations is the best form of flattery! I too shall steal his design!
Thanks, Park. Will try the series and get back to you.
Just finished making the axle puller and it worked like a charm! Thanks!
Made the axle puller with some small modifications. Works perfect and with the nuts spot welded the bolts don't wander as much and a ratchet makes tightlng easier. Thanks for the great idea.
