I recently purchased a 1952 hornet 4dr serial number 135661, the engine is stamped 5321904 with a casting number 5329000 and either k142 or k145 under the dist. Can anyone tell me what year this engine is.
Thank You
Sounds like a 55-57 308. Does it have 1/2 inch head bolts? What color is the block?
If it has 1/2 inch head bolts, the block is grey/blue in color, and has hydraulic lifters it would be a replacement engine from the late days of Hudson. There are some discussions on the forums about these engines and how folks could order them new in crates from JC Whitney after Hudson had folded. My 51 has one of these engines.
Hope this helps and I'm sure folks with more experiences than I can help clean up anything I got wrong or expand on my explanation.
In 1955 when AMC took over, all engines and parts started with a 5. So you have a 55 or 56 engine. Walt.
The casting numbers for 55 - 56 from Alex's list in the library (see here Engine Casting Numbers ) are:
308 1955 532500 A 135 CWC
308 1956 532500 L 95 CWC
K145 = Nov 14, 1955
As far as serial numbers...I believe that the 55 and up 308's had the number boss on the left side of the engine just below the head surface. the pre 55's had the number boss on the right front of the block just ahead of the manifold.
Well I gotta be different. The casting number on my 51 Hornet Club Coupe is 5325000 CWC 2.
Previous owner said the engine came from a 55 hornet.
I'm guessing some kind of replacement engine as there is no serial number anywhere that I can see.
There is a machined pad on the left side front of the block, but no numbers stamped on it.
I'm curious, does the engine have hydraulic lifters? 1956 only, right?
As far as I can tell, mine has mechanical lifters.
