Is there any trick to removal of the entire steering column in a Stepdown (1954)? Everything that we can find has been unbolted and the column is hanging loose under the dash, but still won't pull out. Is there a pin, retainer, etc? Don't want to break anything...
Thank you in advance for any help!
If you are trying to remove the steering box and column all as one unit, you will have to take out down and away from the car from underneath.
Through the engine bay?
Well, your steering box is in the engine bay, so yes. Unless you get into your steering box, the shaft for your steering is attached to the box and comes all the way up to your steering wheel. Removing that shaft is a bench job. . .
What is it you are trying to do, exactly?
makes sense, I thought the steering box could be disconnected from shaft and pulled through the firewall.
The issues lie in the shifting mechanisms, the trans/clutch have all been rebuilt but the shifter has issues with movement/travel. It will only go into reverse and another gear, I believe 2nd... but the linkage is all free moving at the trans. The goal is to get the column up on a bench and go through it completely.
Eric,
Usually, this is a matter of adjustment of the handy shift mechanism. It does not require removal of the steering column. Look for the procedure in the service manual. You can get that form the literature on this website. I also had some issue with shifting and had to adjust mine a couple times, but it's been years since it gave me trouble. I had my entire car apart though for restoration.
Good luck!
may be an adjustment, but its pretty jammed up. I think the spline in the shifter is stripped.
