Just make one! Actually, this has been in the works for some time now, but just about finished up the springs for the seat back today. Thanks go out to Michael Whitely and Rob Fayette, and Bill Spelic for the great pics and dimensions. Just a little more to go on the back and then I will be taking this to the trimmer's this week. Tomorrow I'll get the seat bottom laid out. For the seat back, I had about 1/2 of a seat back from a junior convertible (Junior cars do not have the center arm rest). The bottom half was rotted away, like someone set it acid 1/2 way up the seat back. It was only about a foot tall when I started. I had some extra sedan springs that loaned parts and pieces for the seat back and seat bottom.
Really interesting learning how the springs are made and put together. No wonder we only use foam these days, so much easier than messing with the springs. But, it's mostly like an original would be and there's some satisfaction in that. I still have to cut down the sedan center arm rest springs to fit the smaller convertible arm rest.
Russell,
Springs add an extra dimension foam just doesn't have.
Are you going to use a foam layer over the springs after the burlap?
All the cars I've sat in that have both are far, far better than springs and batting alone!
If you have any springs from the less used edges/sides of the seats you salvaged, let me know, I'd like to buy some.
I have a low spot in mine that needs attention.
Rob
Hey Russell, it's looking great! Keep plugging away, you're getting closer to taking it to the Drive-In theater! Nobody knows how much work you've done. All the little details that get covered up and no one knows all the hard work done but you. The restoration of a convertible that you started with is just mind boggling to say the least. You are amazing!! You get a standing ovation from me!
I just dropped my 49 tudor seats at the trim shop. Just the springs are left. All the foam, burlap, etc. is gone or rotten. A 50 pacemaker front split seat and a 51 hornet rear with the large center arm rest. Mine will be partial vinyl and the rest fabric. I am waiting for the quote! Glad it's not leather! I saw a 38 Hudson he did and it was fabulous. The seats may end up better than the rest of the car! I'll have to re-do some stuff to make it match!
Russell.. Keep up with the keepin' on !
Very impressive! I can only imagine the satisfaction from making something like that! You are a true craftsman!
