Dennis Flint needs an overdrive for his Jet. If not, which rear end will fit? His top speed is 40mph with his low rear end!

Just my opinion, but if 40 is his current top speed, adding an overdrive won't improve it except downhill with a strong tailwind. He has other performance issues to resolve.

That is the top speed he will drive it as the rear end is so low, it just rives too high. It will go faster, but he does not want to hear the engine wind up too high.

Tell me exactly what the differential gear ratio is. The factory usually installed the 4.10 to 1 ratio rear end in standard transmission Jets. and most of those cars would get up to 85 to 90 mph very easily. Let me know, and maybe we can figure out what the problem is.

From Dennis' description, it might be the 4.27 to 1. If someone can call him at (916) 835-1272, that would be the best. I'm just the messenger. He is not on the Hudson internet sites. He would like to be able to drive it on the freeway. It is the ex-Salvo car,(Berkeley protester) which was in San Francisco with their steep narrow roads. It was restored by the late Red Burke.

Pardon me if you already know how to determine rear end gear ratio. I you do not here is a simple way to find out. Put blocks in front and back of front tires to keep car from moving. Release parking brake. Put transmission in neutral. Jack up one rear wheel off ground. Put a chalk mark on bottom side of tire. Put a chalk mark on drive shaft. Turn the jacked up tire two complete revotutions and at same time count how many times the drive shaft turn. That will tell you what the rear gear ratio is.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. Dennis is over 300 miles from me, so if anyone wants to call him for advise, his phone number is above.
Just trying to help a brother out.
