Is there any reason not to replace the oil cups with zerk fittings? Some on my '28 were already replaced with the older (Alomite?) fittings. It seems a "light weight" grease would work.
Thank goodness for this site:

Yep... the oil cups are matched to the bearing. The bearings need oil, not grease. If the bearings are in good condition then grease will be too thick and will not properly lubricate .
You will find plenty of people who will say they have done it with no problems. But grease cups were around way before the oil cups.. If they were designed for grease, they would have been using grease cups
Sorry about that... I know the oilers can be difficult to find

Which oil cups are you talking about?
I'm referring to the oil cups that lube the steering components and springs.
You should leave the oil cups on the king pins, but all others you can replace with grease nipples and use a grease gun on these. There is only one fitting on top of the king pins, and if you use grease in here it does not get to the bottom bushing. Also you must never use grease in the steering box. 600W oil is best for this.
600W? Is that the same as 90W over here, Geoff?
No, 600W is steam cylinder oil, ab it like treacle in consistency, and great for early steering boxes, as it is liquid enough to flow between the mating surfaces, but too thick to run out the bushings. There are no seals on a 1928 Hudson steering box.
