My fuel system is leaking at the pickup flange. It looks like a flat flange with a gasket.
The 1951 Service Manual says drop the tank to service it.
It sure looks like it could be removed without doing that, but...
I could use some better pics of the area and some advice.
Many thanks in advance.
Dean

Dean,
I've had mine out (also '51) and there was no reason to drop the tank at all.

Did you use a fuel resistant gasket material or a silicone product to reseal the flange?

Dean,
It has been a few years but my recollection is that it was a rubber impregnated cork gasket material intended for gasoline/oil applications. The car is up in the air as I type, so I can look tomorrow. If I were to do that same project today, I'd use some of the Viton sheet I have since it is very good for petrol immersion apps. For what it's worth, it hasn't leaked in the 5 or 6 years it's been there.
BTW.....I wouldn't use any silicones for gasoline exposure, especially in light of today's ethanol "enhanced" fuels.
