Hi,
I am wondering exactly the correct way to check the transmission fluid in a 1953 Hydramatic.
I read somewhere that I should have the engine in Low with the parking break on. When I do this the dip stick is covered.!
When I check it with the car in 3 or 4 it gives me a better reading. Does anyone know the exact procedure?
Also, how much fluid should this hold without the converter. I drained the pan to replace the pan gasket. The fluid looked good so I did not drain the converter.
Any info would be great. Thank you.
go to "library" and to Alex's literature; '48-'54 Literature,'48-'54 Manuals, page 2, '50-'52 Hydra-matic service manual; page 56 etc

Run engine till engine reaches full temp, the check fluid with the trans dip stick and it should read to the full mark. If just oil pan is drained, install 4 quarts, start engine and pass it through all gears, then check fluid and add till it reads on the full mark. Do not overfill as it will form air bubbles and can hurt the driven plates, cause them to slip. Walt.
Thanks for the info. Is it correct that the fluid should be checked when the car is in "N"?
I read in 2 manuals that it should be checked in "N" and in one that it should be checked in "L".
Thanks.
Yes, all checking is in park after you run it through all gears. Walt.
Thanks Walt.
Did you mean 'N', Walt?
Meant to say N. Walt.
