I think I know the answer but I thought I should bounce it off the general collective knowledge. Are valve guides pressed in from the top down or are the pressed in from the bottom. I am disassembling a 308 and want to press the guides out.

Pressed from the top down. Hudson had a puller that pulled them up out of e block. Drive them down until they almost touch the lifter, then pop them with a hammer and chisel at the bottom and they will break off. Drive the remaining piece out. Easy peasy.
Since you are tearing the engine down, wait 'til the cam and lifters are out, then I'd recommend A 15+ inch long piece of cold-rolled 5/8" shafting with a short .343" pilot on one end (make it the end that goes into the guide) and drive 'em up from below when you have the block inverted. Easy-peasy with no risk of chipping the block guide bores.
Just Frank's two-bit's worth.
