On the '53 Hornet with Hydra-matic there is a light in the shift indicator on the steering column. Where does the wire leading from the light bulb terminate?

thanks

It goes all the way to the end of the tube above the steering column in the engine bay. The wire is in the middle of the open end and you can push it up to push up the bulb socket along with the spring at the shifter behind the steering wheel.
Can't remember if you have 12 V in your '53 but if you do, check my post on Sept 19 about a bulb change I made so I could see the gear selection better.

Richard, I know about the end with the light bulb but what I need to know is where does the other end terminate. Lance said it terminates on the neutral safety switch. At present I do not have the neutral safety switch wired & I can't find a wiring diagram showing me how to do it. Anybody out there that has knowledge of the wiring of the neutral safety switch I would really appreciate it if you would share it with me.

Regards

that switch is within 1" of that end; I will have to look later, but Lance knows a lot more about this that I do.

J-

There are three posts on that switch. One of the outside leads goes to the small post on your starter solenoid. The other outside lead goes to the starter terminal on your ignition. In other words, this switch is interrupting the flow from key to starter solenoid, and only completes the circuit, if tranny is in "N". If you have back up lights, then center post is used to light up those lights, which engage when in Reverse.

Will get pic if you need it, let me know.

Russ, pictures would be extremely helpful if it's not too much trouble. If I understand your instructions the neutral safety switch is placed in circuit # 14 between the ign. switch & the starter solenoid. My neutral safety switch has 2 screw type connectors then between those connectors are 2 male bullet type connectors. Do I use the 2 screw type connectors or the bullet type? Then to my original question which of the neutral safety switch connectors do I use for the shift indicator light?

I checked my wire. It goes thru the grommet in the firewall to under the dash. Did not look on the inside of the car but I would think it would be in the parking light circuit. Why would you want a shift indicator light on if it is not dark? It is a small wattage bulb so you could wire it into an ignition-on wire or the wire going to the front parking lights that is in the engine compartment.
I have my front parking lights wired where they come on when the ignition is on so I can use them for running lights. Want every one to see my car and not run into it !!!

Richard-

Just got back to the forum. I'll get a pic for you, but you are right about the indicator light. You want that coming on when the dash lights are on, so just jump it to your other dash lights.

Hard to get a good pic, but the two terminals with the screws are the ones that go to the starter solenoid and to your starter terminal on your ignition.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I can now continue my wiring & hopefully soon be able to FIRE HER UP!!!! Isn't it strange that nowhere is there a diagram for the neutral safety switch, the shift indicator light or the heater. Anyway onward I go with everyone's help.

regards to all

J

Consider pulling extra 12 gage wire to the rear for backup lights if you haven't pulled the rear stuff yet. That wire will connect to safety switch also as I remember. Tough to back in daytime; tougher in the dark.

Richard thanks for the advice. No I haven't pulled the wires for the rear. I'm working my way from front to back.
