I finally have my manifold off so I can get the broken bolt repaired.

Would someone explain the heat flap in the exhaust side, please?

Is there supposed to be any play when cold, sitting on the bench? OR is it extremely stiff and only the high heat can move it?

While off and getting bolt repaired, is a light blast and ceramic coating worth the time and money?

Make sure it moves free and is not stuck in the closed position. Walt.

Any recommendations on getting the shaft unstuck?

I have started the WD-40 Special Rust Penetrate spray. Only one spray thus far.

Since you, like most of us only drive our Hudsons during the spring, summer & fall, I'd go ahead and remove the flapper and plug the shaft holes with proper sized bolts. All the flapper was in there for was to aid in the "warm-up" process during acclimate, cold weather

My Pacemaker had the same problem but the flap was stuck shut. Nothing I did would move it, so my mechanic lowered the exhaust pipe and put a pry bar up in there and bent the flap away. Even with all that it didn't become unstuck. But, it is now out of the way.

If you have the exhaust out, take a die grinder and grind out the spot welds until the flap is loose on the . Then drive the shaft out, and put two 7/16 inch bolts in and then tack weld or pound the nut slightly out of round and tighten. No need for the flap anymore with current gas. The only thing it will do is push exhaust up into the intake and coat the cast iron. Also if you have the intake manifold off, and its twin H, pop the freeze plugs out and clean the inside of the manifold as good as possible. Freeze plugs are common and available at any autoparts store. Unburn fuel will coat the intake and when you shut the car off, it will stay hot and boil the gas out of the carbs.

Possible boiling or evaporation of fuel from bowl(s) is a good reason to have an electric fuel pump back at the tank for <15 sec. priming, etc. Will also let you really know if you are out of gas; if you turn it on and it chatters very fast and doesn't slow down, then you are definitely out of Petrol !!!
