Altitude in Colorado,I plan on driveing my car there and mybe to pikes peak i live in minnasota, I had problems from UT.salt flats to Nevadas host hotel Golden nugget i got off interstate and took what looked to be a short cut through the mountains (wrong) car lost power and then started to over heat the car was a 50 hudson pacemaker 308 twin H 3 speed O.D no proublem going home stayed on inerstate what can be done so the cars will run well in high altitude, This may be something that Walt, M can help with .

I was the guy putting transmission in my car at nevada nat, on 5 level of parking ramp golden nugget

Walt here; To run at higher altitudes you have to have the correct metering rods. Up to 5,000 foot level you need 1 lean, 5 to 9,000 foot level you need 2 lean and from there on up you need 3 lean. This means you have to change the rods as you go higher, as you can not have leaner rods at lower altitudes, can burn the valves and no power. Give me the carb number and I will give you the correct rods for the level you will go too.

Walt,

Are the rods internal or external?

Is all that effort needed for going over a pass, say 30-40 miles, or is it more for extended driving at higher altitudes?

Thank you.

Rob

414 - Not a Hudson carb number. I think it's late 1930's - 1938 Hudsons used a 411s on early Model 89, 417S on later.

#968s are for 51 to 53 Hornets and 2113s are for 54 hornets. 414 does not fit any Hudsons. #968s, 75-834, one lean, 75-861, 2 lean is 75-862 and 3 lean is 75-863. The 2113s is the same as #968s, only metering rods were changed and idle jet. Rods, 75-955 std, 1 lean 75-974, 2 lean 75-975 and 3 lean 75-976. You will have problems as soon as you hit the higher altitude, no power and temp will climb right to the top of the gauge. Walt.

Carter carb #414s is a semi universal replacement carb for a variety of makes from the mid 1930's including Hudson 8's; Hupp;
Pontiac 8's; Studebaker Commander 6. It is a model W-1.
This info from Carter carb catalog dated 1953.
