Think I may have posted this in the wrong spot the first time.
Hello All,
Not sure I am in the right spot to ask questions. First time posting on the forum.
My '49 Super Six just began to sputter today at stop lights. It has run beautiful since having the carb rebuilt about two months ago, but today on the way home it began to sputter at every stop light. I raised the idle via the adjustment screw on the throttle linkage and it smoothed out, but at a higher rpm of course which seems to high to me. When I tried to bring it back down it begins to sputter again like it is going to stall. Before I jump in and start trouble shooting does anyone have an idea of what I should look for first? What would cause it to just start doing this all of a sudden?
Appreciate Any Advice,
Rob
Maybe had some sort of debris in the carb idle circuit. Tank the air cleaner off, rev up the car in neutral and place your palm over the carb. This will force gas thru the circuits.
Robert, your original discussion was re-posted to the correct forum category "Hudson". It is here: http://www.hetclub.org/index.php?option=com_kunena&view=topic&catid=18&id=1986&Itemid=1218
I would advise you not to post a second discussion on the same subject. If you do, you'll get different people answering both discussions and you will then have to remember to check both discussions each time you return to the forum, lest you miss a valuable answer. This will turn out to be rather inconvenient for you!
If the issue came on quickly, you might have a look for a cracked/rupture vacuum line or a ruptured diaphragm in the vacuum advance can. Any air leak into the intake system due to any such defect may cause what you describe. A small shot of carb cleaner in a suspect area, while the engine is running, will usually reveal if it is or is not the culprit. If there's a leak, the engine will momentarily speed up. Be careful not to set it on fire, of course.

Thanks Jon... I thought I put it in the wrong spot the first time and could not see how to remove it.
Thank you so much for the assistance here. I could not find any vacuum leaks, but with the RPMs already high I may not have heard the difference. I also tried what Russ suggested and immediately it seemed to run much better. I was able to lower the idle back down with no sputter at all. It was completely warmed up so I am going to let it cool down again and then she how she sounds. Now I need to try and get the idle back to where she is supposed to be without any way to measure RPMs:)
Again, Appreciate all the help. You all are Awesome!!! I will let you know how she drives when the rain lets up.
I had a similar issue in a Studebaker truck I had a few years back (small 6 cyl w/Carter carb); it did just what Robert's car did, I had to keep the idle up to keep it running. I took the carb off and found a "booger" in the idle jet, but I like the choke out method-less work!
