Hello all,
Does anyone have the Timken part number for the outer axle bearing cone & cup for a 35 Terraplane? I have a 2581-T cone and 2523 Cup that I hope are the correct parts. I emailed Paul large type and he wasn't sure. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tom

Tom,
According to the Hudson Manuals, those are the correct parts. Do you have installation instructions? The tapered bore bearings hence the "T" suffix) require a certain procedure. Many will jump in here and tell you how it's done. All I will say is do not use a press.

Frank,
I have the procedures manual but the instructions call for a tool to remove the rear wheel bearing cups and axle shaft then removing the cone from the shaft. The tool appears to be a slide hammer. Does anyone have a more complete set of instruction? Does anyone have the J-352 axle shaft & bearing puller mentioned that could post a picture of it.
Thanks again
Tom

Tom,
The puller shown is just a slide-hammer puller with an adapter to the 3/4-20 axle-nut thread (assuming it's the same as the later thread form). The axle should come out without a great deal of effort, bringing the cup out with it. . I suspect you could put the drum back on very loosely, without the drive key, and use it as a poor-man's slide hammer. The auto-makers liked to specify that you use various special tools, implying that they are required to do the job. I suppose it brought business to their dealership repair departments and covered their tails in terms of liability.

Hello All,
I have an update on the 2581-T cone bearings. I found a distributor that sold my Tyson brand 2581-T cones. I purchased two . I've also found another warehouse that says they have several hundred NOS 2581-T Timken's. I purchased two with the matching 2523 cups. I've attached a picture. Apparently the 2523 cups are still in production as they are used in many applications. I measured the Timken and Tyson bearings more closely and they are within a few thou of each other. The outer cage on the Tysons are thinner and don't appear quite as round or nicely formed as the Timken. I attached a picture of them next to each other. Anyway, the warehouse would only sell them through one of their distributors, one of which is a company I already do business with through my work. The price through the local distributor for the Timken are also a little less then the Tyson's.
If anyone is interested in these it's looking like $28.00 each for the Timken 2581-T cones plus the shipping. The cups should be available at NAPA or the like but I didn't verify this. If folks preferred I could get the cone & cup in sets for $38.00 plus shipping. I figured that having to go through a distributor and that I've already got that covered may make this the easiest way to get this done. I posted this on the old forum. Jon B the administrator on the old forum had suggested I submit an add to the WTN for those who may not be online.
I'm not sure if this is the place for this post but this is were I started it.

Tom,
Good work! :cheer:
I'm "in" for 4 of the Timken 2581-T cones. Cups are common so there's not much point in shipping those. What's my next move to seal the deal?

OK Fred . I have four people so far including yourself. I'm going to wait a another week or so before I place an order to see if any others are interested. I'll keep you posted.

Tom,

Already posted on the other forum that I would take the two sets for my 35. Let me know how you would like to proceed.

Thanks for chasing this down.

No worries, They are going to be spares so I have them when I need them.

I will ask if anyone from the Gem State Chapter would like some.

Hello Everyone,
I have another update about the Timken 2581-T cone bearing. I looked they up in the Master Chassis Group Parts Book. It appears this bearing is used on the 33-34-35 Terraplane, 34-35 UCo & 89-90. I edited the topic to add 33-34 for those years. I would be good if someone could verify the parts book as being correct. Anyway, I'll wait a little longer before placing an order for those who've already chimed in.

I would be interested in 4 of the bearing cones. I can get the cups locally. Let me know the total with shipping cost.
