On a topic related to bring my 112 back to life what do folks think about replacing the points with electronic ignition?

I've seen a few topics related to it on here and it seems that generally it's looked upon as being a good idea. If so then what are the suggestions? I know Val was looking to replace his a while back and I have somewhere a note of what he suggested but can I find it ....

I'd be interested to hear what the opinions are so thanks in advance!

The popular conversion is to the Pertronix 1568 P-6 unit. Don't even think of trying it with the distributor in the engine. They're a bit spendy but well made, reliable and will save you the annual grief of dealing with corroded points. A thorough cleaning/check of the rest of the distributor is advisable since it's on the bench anyway. Bushing/shaft clearance is of less importance with the Pertronix set-up since play doesn't significantly affect timing (within reason) whereas point gap and, thus, timing can be erratic in the original breaker-points set-up.
I just converted an IGW 4203 (the later version of yours) with the same kit but it requires slight modification to fit correctly.

Jairo Medina just put Pertronic in is 46 Hudson Coupe. Now it starts instantly. No more long cranking sessions before starting.

Every old car I have or had in the last 10 or so years has a Pertronix ignition. Nothing better. My 49 eight has one along with the flame thrower coil. Looks stock (6 volt pos. gnd.) Starts immediately!!! I don't think you could do better.

IMO, an electric pump for priming and a Pertronix Ign are just about the best two things you can do for your Hudson. in terms of quick easy starts after periods of non-use. My starter actually wrote a letter of thanks after I added those features......really. I wouldn't lie. This is a discussion forum. No one lies here.

Apply full voltage( rewire) while starting { if a ballast is involved}. 2 seconds max.should be norm.

Have any of your Pertronix ignition units ever failed?

No, but one I purchased many years ago for a Model a Ford did after only 17 miles ! Not a Pertronix product. I don't recall the brand name, but it wasn't replaced. I just went with points on that one.

David,
Did you get the Petronix "Stock Look" distributor for the 49? Which Petronix distributor and coil do you recommend for my 48 Commodore 8?

I bought the kit to modify my stock 49 8 cyl. distributor from Pertronix direct, then later purchased the Flame Thrower coil they recommended through Amazon.. I am using the original 6 volt pos. gnd. system. I don't recall the part numbers. If you email Pertronix, they can advise you on which parts you need. Was reasonably easy to do.
The only electronic ignitions I have had problems with were OEM GM products! One failure on a 454 , three on GM v6 applications in a pickup and two vans. and a 76 Chevy 350 (THREE!) All HEI systems. Maybe I have bad luck?
