It's mechanically impossible for one rear wheel to be turning, one wheel not, and not have the driveshaft also turning, so I'm stickin' with the brake explanation.
The GM Hydra-Matic has a neutral, but no "Park" while the engine is running. With an absence of hydraulic system pressure in the trans (engine off or system failure) reverse becomes park by design. Akin to a spring-brake system in an air-brake equipped truck, the park-pawl is spring applied and hydraulically released, assuming that the selector lever is in the "R" position. Shutting the engine off "enables" the park feature.
Apparently, the GM "Hydro-matic" is a rare, early unit that used inexpensive water for fluid but was quickly discontinued due to severe corrosion issues.

Frank, Love your scholarly explanations for many Hudson mechanical problems. Especially enjoyed the description of the "early "Hydromatic" !

🙂 🙂

Fred,
Yeah....it's always been a pet peeve of mine that the majority of Hudson guys call them a
HydrO-matic" when it's actually "HydrA-matic". Hydro implies H2O in there somewhere.
Look up "anal retentive" and you'll see my picture beside it.

frank, lighten up,.... slang for the GM HYDRA-MATIC has always been Hydro for me, never spelled completely out?. Saying "Hydra" sounds like a new KIA or Honda model.

Agreed, "Hydra" just doesn't sound right, but my lack of lightness was with "Hydromatic". It's right up there with Cummings engines, Splicer transmissions and selenoids ......the list goes on.
Lightly,

Frank,

Take it one step further and come up with a Hydro-Electric transmission, it could create it's own power, which would make it a Smart-Car.

It's already on the drawing board as a spin-off project to my Perpetual Motion Device. The plan is to have it produce more power than it needs, then sell the surplus to the power companies.......wealth beyond Patty's wildest dreams is at hand! Stay tuned.
