Is there any difference in the steering column of the short wheelbase and long wheelbase step downs? I'm trying to change to the hydro colum from a hornet to my super wasp?
Thanks
Dusty
Dusty, you will need a SWB column, the long wheel base columns are longer and have a different gear box. If you get another column with gear box, be sure to pull the cover and check the worm and roller gear inside. I've checked 5 and all were bad. I sent the gear box out and had it rebuilt.

That's what I figured.
Thanks

Actually, the SWB column is longer than the LWB. I think the shift tube is the same though, but could have a different angle going to the transmission. An easy way to determine if it is a SWB VS LWB steering column?. The SWB has an angled mounting flange to frame-about 60 deg. and the LWB is almost 90 deg. I hope this helps.
Doug's right of course. Tried to make the correction when on my I-pad this morning but I'm having trouble when using it and getting-posting on this forum.
The steering boxes are different and have different ratios. The worm gear in the wasp version is a trouble spot as I stated above.
Some owners have installed the lwb unit into the SWB cars but I understand it's not a cake walk job.

As Kerry has pointed out. The SWB cars have different ratio's. We have not tried to installing the guts out of the LWB column into the SWB housing, but I can see that issue coming sometime in the near future though. More times than not, the SWB steering gear has excessive wear in it, with few if any service parts available.. You must be very careful when adjusting the play out of the gear. It is usually worn in the middle or center position, which can be tightened slightly. It is not recommended to tighten all or most of the wear out of the gear. This will cause the gear to bind up with turning- not worn area- because it will have NO or very little wear by comparison in that area. I hope this doesn't confuse some. Always refer to the mechanical procedures manual for adjustments!
Doug,
Is it possible to reduce the play when driving straight ahead by adjusting the drag link so the steering box is not in its most-worn position when the car is going straight ahead? I realize that this would limit the ability of the car to turn in one direction.

Hello Per. I would guess you could. I think if it was worn enough to require this, it wouldn't be long before you were doing it again. I've seen a few places that offer manual steering gear overhauls, and just question what they are actually going to repair. If they had the correct equipment to weld the wear/worn areas, and then grind them to specs. We had enough in the past to just go get another one from the barn, but get calls about these all the time. It would be good information to know, and be able to recommend a company when we get those calls. We don't really sell these because of the lack of knowledge about it.. Hope to see you in Colorado Springs!
Doug, new parts are installed. I've had two rebuilt. The "gemmer" box was used by several other makes as well.
After receiving one back from the rebuilder, I took it apart just to see if they had actually put new parts back in and they had.
I sent the first one off after looking at 6 different boxes and finding the exact same issue in every one of them, the gear on the end of the column shaft wasn't so much worn out as it seemed the actual gear was defective. After spending a lot of time trying to find a good one I located two companies that could rebuild with new parts.
MY STEERING GEAR BOX FIX IF YOUR BOX IS NOT SHOT TO HELL AND YOU JUST HAVE PLAY IN THE WHEEL WHILE GOING DOWN THE ROAD MY TRICK IS TO ADJUST YOUR TIE RODS THE 2 ON THE LEFT MAKE A BIT LONGER AND THE 2 ON THE RIGHT MAKE A BIT SHORTER I ALWAYS GO 2 OR 3 FULL REVOLUTIONS ON RIGHT AND ON LEFT THAT WAY YOU MAKE A CHANGE ON BOTH SIDES AND YOU SHOULD BE STILL INLINE YOU STEERING WHEEL WIL BE A BIT OFF ( YOU YOU WANT YOU CAN TAKE IT OFF AND REINSTALL IT SO IT IS STRAIGHT) IT WORKS EVERY TIME WE HAVE DONE THIS TO MANY HUDSON AND OTHER CARS IT'S LIKE MAGIC
