I have been trying to remove the Steering Arm (This is the arm that connects the tie rod to the Steering Spindle) from the Spindle on my 1949 Hudson Commodore with no luck. So I can replace the Spindle and King Pin. The manual says to use tool J-1373. I have no idea what that is. I have a press, I figured I could just press it out once I removed the nut holding it on. But the Arm will not budge. What am I doing wrong or how do you remove it?
Steve, Try this: unscrew the nut on the tie rods until you have about 3/8 " or until the top of the nut is level with the tie rod stud. Then take a hammer and rap the nut That should start the tie rod end moving out of the steering arm. If that dosen't work ,use heat to loosen up the area of contact and rap it again. Good luck! 🙂
you can go to any parts store and buy a pickle fork they work great I would never use heat on steering parts you take the nut off of your tie rod end then insert the fork between the tie rod and steering arm and hit it with a three pound hammer my take a few hits be careful not to damage the tie rod end rubber seal when you insert the fork.
Thats great if you can wiggle a pickle fork in there but usually space is tight. I've had great luck just hammering as I said earlier. Tom with regard to heat there is not enough heat generated with a propane torch to really do that much to take the temper away from the steel. At least thats been my experience. Most times these tie rod ends have been on so long that they just need a good rap.
Guys,, Did I read this wrong?? I thought the question was how to remove steering arm from the spindle.
Same basic removal technique has worked for me. loosen steering arm nut until flush with end of threads.
Then "attack" with hammer or air hammer. Persistence usually pays off.
Good luck,
"Ric"
Mr Pinder has it right. I am trying to remove the steering arm from the spindle. I ordered an air hummer and will see if that will get it off.
