There are cone-shaped springs behind the door cards where window cranks and door handles reside, presumably to push the door card and bezel out and against the handle. Because the frt doors have a vent window crank, main window crank and door opener each, and the rears have a window crank and door opener each, if each has a spring I need 10 springs for a sedan. Is this correct, or do certain handles not require a spring? I have found 8 in a donor car. Do I need 2 more?
Hudsonly,

Dave,
This spring is to keep the assembly from rattling. It is my experience that often the upholstery panel pushes outwards enough that a spring is not necessary. I sometimes have not put a spring back when reassembling a handle because of this.

All the springs are the same, but all the escusheons are not. Make sure you use the correct ones. If you look, there is some that have offset, some that don't have cleats holding them in place, some that are shallow and smooth, some slightly offset, and no cleats. Most of these that have heavy offsets applied to senior cars only. We always use the springs, but if the new door panel backer board and/or material used is too thick, it may not be required.
Doug, thank you. I have had all the escutcheons re-chromed, and I am not sure which are for which handles. My car is a 53 4DR Hornet sedan. As only 2 escutcheons are offset, I assumed they are for the front wing windows? Please tell me which handles get the pronged escutcheons. I did not make note of this during disassembly- oops!
Dave
Thank you Per. Will consider deleting a spring where deemed unnecessary.
Can anyone answer the escutcheon question???
Dave, Sorry, I can't answer the question on the escutcheons.
To add to the existing information, the springs (and upholstery) also serve to hold the bezel over the handle shaft such that the retention pin does not fall out. This is the advantage of having the higher force the springs offer over upholstery alone.

Thanks, Pat
David, Can't believe your question hasn't been answered yet.
I dug through the snow to get to the barn. Checked my 49 Commodore sedan as I didn't trust my memory.
There are two smooth escutcheons, back doors Inner handle,
this is over the metal door top moulding.
There are 6 pronged escutcheons for front and rear doors.
2 on each front door and 1 on each rear.
Remember, smooth over metal and prongs over fabric/vinyl.
Hope this helps

Ric,
Thank you and Eureka! Of course you can't have those "teeth" stabbing at the stainless strips! Makes perfect sense. Please don't go back out in the snow, but can you recall which escutcheons are angled/offset? I assume they go on the cranks/ handles where the door card is angled as compared to the handle shaft. Any one?
I really appreciate the help!
Dave
David, I have only 2 that are angled, the rear door opening
handles have them, half on the wide metal moulding and half on the fabric door inset panel. This is on a 49 Commodore sedan.

Thanks so much. now I can get my doors together!
I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner. We have been real busy. Thank you Ric for answering him. Also, I believe on 2 dr.,senior models, there is a slight offset on the frt. vent window crank. There is also supposed to be a foam donut behind all the senior models vent window escheon. This is to prevent them from rattling against the metal door valance. Post pictures of your interior all done! Thanks Doug
