Just wondering the views of you all regarding storing of spare tyres put aside for future use (not on the car as yet). I have some new tyres in the shed and also some used ones on rims for both the Hudson and the Essex.
Should you store tyres lying down or standing up - any difference if on a rim or not on a rim?
I just don't want to find in a year or so that how they have been stored has caused a fault or problem.
Thanks in advance.
Alistair,
I suppose it depends on the kind of tyre. The rear tyres on my 1935 Hudson have been on it since l963 (soon after I bought the car), and the front tyres since 1972. I have never jacked the car up when it is stored. It is stored in a dry garage. The size is 6:50-16, and they are bias, not radial.
These tyres work properly right away after long storage, but I have had tyres on other cars that thumped for some time when driving, before becoming totally round again!

Thanks for your response Per. The tyres are not on the car, they are spare in the shed for future use. I need to understand how best store tyres awaiting use.
When the car has been sitting for long periods I have occasionally encountered a slight flat spot that disappears reasonably quickly.
Alistair,
The most frequent problem I have seen with a tyre stored a long time, is that it often is leaning on the wall of a leaky shed, and a small lake of water collects inside the tyre. I have seen tyre-size plastic bags for sale. These could be an option. If I make a pile for tyres, I put a piece of plywood at the bottom, in case there is moisture coming from the floor or water leaking onto the floor. To me, it doesn't make a difference what position the tyres are in.

Synopsis of advise -
- Don't store them dirty, or with chemicals, etc., on them. They should be clean & dry before stored;
- Don't put 'tire shine', or any other type of chemicals on them;
- Keep them cool, dry and out of the sun. If possible, use storage bags made for that purpose;
- If they have whitewalls, store them 'whitewall to whitewall';
- Do not hang them;
I had 5 NZ made tyres for my Essex stored under the house for about 20 years before using them. The were stored on the flat & (more importantly) in the dark. In my opinion light & UV markedly affects tyres. They were fine when I eventually needed to use them.
20 Years? Shees, I'm scared to buy anything for my car farther than 6 months out due to the fact I may die before I need it! Lol.
