I had the engine changed in my 52 Hornet from 2 barrel 308 to Twin H 308 and now the 4 speed auto works ok in 1st 2nd and fourth. But slips right through third to 4th gear. The trans worked perfectly prior to engine change. Walt told me to remove the top nut on rod to trans and rod should move toward trans about 3/4" but rod does not move down. It has been suggested that something broke inside trans during removal that maybe outside lever hit or got cought on something.

Any suggestion on repair needed. All tune up adjustments made, twin h carbs balanced, rod to trans adjusted. What inside the trans needs repair.
I sure would like to have it fixed to drive to the All Calif. Meet on Thursday.

Since starting this I found out the trans was not removed from the car. Still need suggestion to fix slipping in 3rd gear problem. Car sat for probably a year during this time so maybe the bands need adjusting even though the trans worked ok before but not now? It works good in 1st, 2nd, and 4th but slips right though 3rd to 4th. It worked perfectly before engine change and the bands had not been adjusted during the time car out of operation.

I disconnected the linkage to the long lever on the hydro. When I tried to move the lever it would sometimes move free, bind or doesn't move. Mostly binding. Probably broken detent?

Does anyone on the forum know if it can be fixed in the car or if the trans has to come out first. Lee O'Dell

There are a couple of tech manuals for the hydramatics in the online library, Lee - if that would be of any help.

Do you have a "dual range" hydramatic (choice of 3rd gear or 4th gear - two positions in the drive position)

If you do, what does it do in the "3" position, where is supposed to stay in 3rd gear?
