Hi John,
if I understand this right, this couples the timing gear with the shaft that drives the generator, the oil pump and the distributor...
So if this coupling fails, we have no ignition, oil and power!
Wow, real SINGLE POINT of mess..
but probably the generator caused that prob, as it was replaced and NOT properly balanced and aligned...
Thanks, great work!
Has the coupling part broken? May it be welded together?
I am trying to telephone a gentleman who has a 1930 Hudson Eight -- perhaps he can offer some advice! (He's not home at the moment...)
I am still confused, as to why the broken piece could have come off the end of the shaft, when it was INSIDE the housing, near the front of your engine (just ahead of the distributor)?
Possibly I do not know where the broken piece came from!
Well maybe it was found AFTER disassembling the timing gear cover...
Or there is a new "inspection hole" now in the front cover ;O))
I thought that you said you discovered the broken piece in the engine compartment! Did you disassemble the timing gear cover, to discover this piece?
Mr. Geoff Clark of New Zealand, has some of these parts. If he was willing to ship one to you, would this be of any help? Or has something else broken, as well?
Where are you located, and are you located in a place where mail and parcels can be shipped in to you?
Die Verteilerantriebritzelgehäuse kaputt! Kein Zündung! Ist das ein Bosch Lichtmaschine drin? Ist es 12 Volt?
Hi,
yes Hudo is converted to 12V neg. ground with an alternator.
The current alternator was a substitution after the breakdown in Usbekistan..
So my guess is, that the Bosch alternator somehow overloaded the drive shaft inside the oil-pump- distributor -timing housing..by misalignment or failed bearings.
Some Chinese mechanics try to rebuild /refactory the broken part....
But a source with pictures of the original part would be a great help!
Hudo and Heidi are in south west China, I'm here in Germany.
Patrik
So.....you are not in China to evaluate the situation, and to determine which parts must be replaced?
If we (in the U.S.) knew what parts you need, perhaps we can find them for you.
I do not think I can find photographs of the individual parts which comprise the entire mechanism (generator, shaft, couplings, water pump, housing, distributor, gears, timing gear). Only drawings such as I have shown you.
If we CAN obtain for you the correct parts, it would be good to send -- in addition -- an original generator (dynamo?). This would alleviate the misalignment problem which may have caused the breakage in the first place.
Can a reputable garage mechanic be found, where the car is now located? He (or she?) could disassemble the distributor and timing gear in order to diagnose the problem and list the replacement parts that are needed. (Some parts may be able to be saved or salvaged. I wonder if the timing gear case can be welded?)
Del Fast here in TX had a lot of 1930-31 Hudson 8 stuff. Maybe he can help?
I have perhaps some good news.
I know someone who has some extra housings (the one that has cracked on "Hudo") with the gears inside them. This housing contains the gears that run the distributor and which hold the forward end of the shaft that runs to the generator.
Also, I have some advice. Remove the alternator and use a 12-volt generator instead. This should fit easily within the cradle on the side of the motor, and it will be smaller than the alternator that is there now. It will not cause the long shaft to mis-align and to (once again) break the housing! The shaft at the front of the generator will connect to the long accessory shaft with a simple tubular rubber coupling as the alternator did before.
Please determine exactly which parts must be replaced so we will know what you need!
Patrik, where is Hudo going after China?
There is a Hudson expert in New Zealand who has the parts and the knowledge to fix the problem. He could possibly ship the parts to Heidi, if you knew exactly which parts you needed.
Jon, Burma and Thailand are next on the itinerary. However, Heidi's Chinese visa runs out Friday evening. They lost two weeks of travel time when the rod bearing went bad earlier this month.
